12 Life Hacks for Tackling Winter in Colorado Springs Like a Pro
Winter has officially arrived in the Pikes Peak region. Take on the winter months like a professional with these helpful life hacks!
1. VINEGAR TO THE RESCUE
Spray your car windows with a 3:1 vinegar/water mixture the night before a deep freeze. This will keep ice from forming on your windows and allow you to wipe off any snow with the greatest of ease!
2. SHOVEL SNOW IN HALF THE TIME
Spray your shovel with nonstick cooking spray before you use it. This will keep snow from building up and sticking to the shovel- cutting the time it takes to shovel a walkway virtually in half!
3. DIY WINTER BIKE TIRES
If you need to use your bike in the snow and ice, place zip ties at even intervals around each tire to create bike snow tires. They grip icy roads and are easy to remove when spring time rolls around
4. Keep your piggies nice and toasty
There’s nothing worse than having cold feet! DIY your own foot insulation by cutting out felt and inserting them into your shoes.
5. GET OUT OF A STICKY SITUATION
Stuck in the snow and don’t have any kitty litter? Use your floor mats under the tires to gain some traction.
6. MAKE THE WORLDS BEST HOT CHOCOLATE
Add Nutella to your hot chocolate or mocha for a delightfully different take on an old favorite. Try 2 tbs (or more, we won’t tell!) of Nutella to hot milk, add some marshmallows and enjoy!
7. BEAT THE WINTER BLUES
The winter blues (or, more scientifically speaking- Seasonal Affective Disorder) is a real problem that millions of people struggle with every year. Combat feeling down by purchasing a natural light lamp that simulates natural sunlight.
8. DIY SIDEWALK MELT
Mix 2 quarts rubbing alcohol, 1 cup warm water, and 1 teaspoon dish detergent then pour over walkways. They won’t refreeze. No more salt eating at the concrete in your sidewalks.
9. TAKE ON THAT NASTY COLD LIKE A BOSS
Rub Vicks Vapor Rub on the soles of your feet if you’ve got a cough. Cover with socks. Even the worst cough can be stopped within 5-15 minutes, and lasts hours.
BONUS: Knock that pesky cold out with this home made remedy:
¼ teaspoon Cayenne
¼ teaspoon Ginger
1 Tablespoon Cider Vinegar (an organic one, like Bragg’s, is preferred.)
2 Tablespoon Water
1 Tablespoon Honey (use a locally produced raw honey, if possible.)
Mix. Shake well.
Take 1 Tablespoon as needed.
10. KEEP YOUR SIDE MIRRORS ICE FREE
Never worry about finding your car’s side mirrors frozen again! Take a big freezer size Ziploc bag and zip it around the mirrors as far as it will go and VOILA! They will stay clear.
11. KEEP YOUR WIPERS HAPPY
Avoid waking up to your wiper blades frozen to your windshield. The night before a big storm, keep your wipers in the air and cover them with old socks.
12. DIY ICE SCRAPER
First off, you live in Colorado. Go purchase an ice scraper… You need one. However, if you find yourself without one, grab that trusty credit card for a great make-shift ice scraper.
