Family Adventure

Day 3

Tips from a local mom for day 3

Today’s activities are in Canon City, about an hour’s drive southwest of Colorado Springs.  If you haven’t booked a cabin or glamping tent at Royal Gorge Cabins, you’re going to be away from home base most of the day and there are couple of things to consider so everyone has a great time.
  1. Drink lots of water — all of you — Colorado is a subalpine desert and dehydration makes the altitude rougher too.  Bring refillable water bottles for all.
2. Bring several layers and a change of clothes.  Even in July, the temperature swings a lot when the sun goes down.  You are also likely to get wet while rafting.  Remember, these rivers are fed by snowmelt, so it’ll be chilly!
3. Wear sunscreen and reapply.  Rocky Mountain sunshine is one of our natural resources.  It’s glorious!  But lobster babies won’t be happy later!  Apply in the morning and again at lunch to make sure everyone has a great vacation.

Fuel up for a big day!

We’ve got a big day planned for you, so grab a good breakfast and get ready to head south. Grab some breakfast burritos at Taco Express and jump on the road.

Echo Canyon River Expedition

Instant family fun, just add water

Mornings are the best time to hit the river, and when you’re planning your family’s adventure, Echo Canyon is the best in the business. With more training and experience than any other outfitter, they’re the only ones to whom I’d trust my family!

Whether you’re looking for an easy family float or an exciting white water experience, they’ve got the perfect adventure for you.  If you’re not sure which float is “the one” for you and the fam, their team has mastered the combination of professionalism and fun to help make planning easy.

Echo Canyon wants your whole experience to be top notch, so they also have a great restaurant onsite, complete with Colorado beer on tap,  and a fire-pit & cornhole sets on the patio — the best recipe to make new friends!  Onsite camping, glamping and luxury cabins round out this once in a life time experience.

Local’s Tip: Be sure to purchase the photo package for your rafting trip, because there are no cellphones on the river!
Time allowance: 3-4 hours

8 mile bar and grill

8 Mile Bar and Grill is a great place to grab a burger or salad, a Colorado crafted brew, and share your river stories with the other patrons. The huge garage doors will give you all the clean rocky mountain air with plenty of shade. The food is great, but that view of the Sangre de Cristo mountains is better.

Royal Gorge Bridge and Park

Celebrating 90 years and counting!

Colorado is bursting with natural beauty. It’s everywhere you look. But we have a few special places that will absolutely take your breath away. Royal Gorge Bridge & Park is one such place.

There are several ways to cross the gorge, which is perfect, because you’ll want to soak in this view from a few different angles.  Take a leisurely stroll across the bridge stopping by your state flag for a photo opp. Kick back in  a gondola ride from rim to rim.  Or for the truly daring, take the zip line across at 1200 feet above the Arkansas River.

The littlest in your family are in for a special treat at Tommy Knocker Playland. Your teens might even have to give it whirl, if they’re not too busy enjoying the Royal Rush Skycoaster.

Local’s Tip: You’ll want to take lots of photos, but they’ll never do it justice.  Spend some time just soaking it all in!
Time allowance: 2-3 hours

While you’re gorge-side

Lots of restaurants in Colorado can boast a great view, but there are only two with this view. Grab dinner with the family at Cafe 1230 or Bridge View BBQ. It’ll give you an excuse to soak in that view a little longer.
