JONGO: Afro-Brazilian Circle Dance
Presented by Heart in Motion at Movement Arts Community Studio Colorado Springs, CO
Afro-Brazilian tradition that involves music, dance and singing. An ancestor of Samba, full of joy and empowerment. Jongo is a traditional Brazilian dance and musical style with strong African roots, especially associated with communities in southeastern Brazil. It combines drumming, singing, and dancing, often performed in a circle. Jongo was historically practiced by enslaved Africans and their descendants and has played an important role in preserving African cultural traditions in Brazil. Jongo, a form of expression using singing, dancing and drumming, was created by enslaved African men and women.
