Author Visit: Denny Dressman
Presented by Pikes Peak Library District at PPLD: Library 21c Colorado Springs, CO
Join Pikes Peak Library District for a discussion with Denver-based author Denny Dressman to talk about his book, Black Baseball's Heyday: Capturing an Era in Art and Words. After the presentation, Denny will be available to sign books and answer audience questions. Black Baseball’s Heyday is a concise yet rich look at the lengthy period of segregated baseball from 1880 to Jackie Robinson’s debut, beginning with the origin of the so-called color line. But Black Baseball’s Heyday also looks at the emergence of thriving neighborhoods of color such as 18th and Vine in Kansas City and Pittsburgh’s Hill District, and cultural developments during the first half of the 20th century, and those who shaped them—jazz icon Charlie Parker, Clowns promoter Syd Pollock, and the “Barbecue King,’” Henry Perry, among them. And throughout, this book displays the creativity and artistry of Kansas City’s Anthony High, an internationally recognized artist. Books will not be sold during the event. You can purchase a copy directly from the publisher through their website and bring it on July 11 to have it signed by the author. This program is being offered to commemorate the Colorado 150 and US 250 anniversaries. Opera Bus Pre-Event: 'What’s All the Singing About?'
Presented by KCME 88.7 FM at KCME Studio Colorado Springs, CO
Once infamously described as "an exotic and irrational entertainment," what we know as opera was originally conceived as a union of several arts: poetry, music, acting, stagecraft, and dance. Four hundred years later, is opera still relevant? Why does it persist? As Robert Benchley once remarked, "Opera is where a guy gets stabbed in the back, and instead of dying, he sings." So let's explore what the singing is about and what it's been like throughout the history of this unique art form.
