Cheesman Park: From Denver's City Cemetery to City Park
Presented by Pikes Peak Library District at PPLD: Library 21c Colorado Springs, CO
Denver was founded in 1858 after gold was discovered along Cherry Creek, helping fuel the Pike's Peak Gold Rush. Some who came seeking fortune stayed to build the city. Others never left. In this presentation, author Erin Taylor explores the story of City Cemetery, Denver's first burial ground. Learn how the cemetery fell into neglect, was eventually abandoned, and later transformed into a public park, despite many graves remaining beneath the grounds. Through historical records, photographs, and local legends, this presentation traces the development of Riverside Cemetery, uncovers enduring mysteries surrounding Denver's early dead, and examines stories of possible hauntings that continue to intrigue visitors today. Throughout Woman of Light, a 2026 All Pikes Peak Reads selection, author Kali Fajardo-Anstine weaves fiction with reality, often times using actual places and landmarks in Denver. Learn more about what main character Luz "Little Light" Lopez would have seen on one of her frequent walks through Cheesman Park in the 1930s. This program is offered in conjunction with the All Pikes Peak Reads (APPR) program and the CO 150 and US 250 anniversaries. Nerd Nite COS Horror Edition: Would You Survive A Horror Movie?
Presented by Storyfull Matchmaking at Avenue 19 Colorado Springs, CO
🔪 NERD NITE HORROR EDITION: COULD YOU SURVIVE A HORROR MOVIE? The killer is in the house. Your car won’t start. Your friend just said, “I’ll be right back.” What do you do? For one night, Nerd Nite Colorado Springs is turning into an interactive horror movie survival experiment. We’re teaming up with the hosts of Slasher & The Final Girls for a night of horror, psychology, crime scene investigation, audience participation, and some very questionable life-or-death decisions. Throughout the night, you and your team will be dropped into classic horror movie scenarios and asked to decide what you would do to survive. Run upstairs or out the front door? Investigate the mysterious noise or absolutely not? Split up or stay together? And what does actual science, psychology, and investigative experience say about your odds? Between scenarios, our speakers will dig into the real-world ideas behind horror movie survival, including crime scene investigation, human behavior, psychology, and the ways movies get all of it spectacularly right or wrong. Come with your own Survivor Squad of four or grab an individual ticket and we’ll place you with a team when you arrive. No horror expertise required. Just bring your best instincts, a willingness to argue with your teammates, and perhaps a healthy distrust of basements. This is not a traditional Nerd Nite. Expect audience participation, team challenges, expert commentary, and a night that gets progressively more ridiculous as we find out who actually has what it takes to make it to…
