LET THE LIGHT IN: World Premiere of New Films
Presented by Youth Documentary Academy at Cornerstone Arts Center Richard F. Celeste Theatre Colorado Springs, CO
Locally produced. Nationally acclaimed. Some stories need to be told. Others need to be seen. Join the Youth Documentary Academy (YDA) for its 13th annual World Premiere of New Films, a celebration of courageous storytelling from the next generation of filmmakers in Southern Colorado. Colorado College's Celeste Theatre will come alive with 11 original documentary films created by talented young storytellers. Through deeply personal perspectives and bold filmmaking, this year's films illuminate stories of immigration, intimate partner violence, suicide prevention, soccer, and the experiences that shape who we are. These films invite us to look closer, listen differently, and discover the humanity in stories that might otherwise go untold. Hosted by Ashley Cornelius, the premiere offers audiences an opportunity to meet the filmmakers, experience their work on the big screen for the very first time, and celebrate the power of young voices. The experience extends beyond the theatre. Beginning at 2:00 PM, explore YDA's annual Connections Corridor, bringing together more than 20 nonprofit organizations, media partners, and colleges for an afternoon of community connection and conversation. Food trucks and pizza will also be available. Author Visit: David Baron
Presented by Pikes Peak Library District at PPLD: Penrose Library Colorado Springs, CO
Join Colorado author, and Colorado Book Award finalist, David Baron as he discusses his newest book, The Martians: The True Story of an Alien Craze that Captured Turn-of-the-Century America. This novel has been chosen as one of 2025’s top books by The New Yorker, TIME, Boston Globe, Science News, Library Journal, and Colorado Public Radio. Read more about the author and his books at: David Baron – Author/Speaker/Journalist. More about the book: A mere century ago, Martians were thought to be real—not fictional—creatures. “Mars is inhabited by a highly civilized and intelligent race of beings,” proclaimed Alexander Graham Bell after astronomers discovered what looked like irrigation canals on the red planet. When Nikola Tesla, in 1899, set up an experimental laboratory in Colorado Springs and detected radio signals that he believed came from Mars, an all-out craze swept society. You could read about the Martians in The New York Times, hear of them in Sunday sermons, and see them depicted on the Broadway stage. Biologists debated whether the aliens were winged or gilled. Inventors devised schemes for communicating with Mars. Philosophers and theologians proposed questions Earth might ask its older, wiser neighbor.
