At the Western Museum of Mining and Industry, just off I-25 on North Gate Boulevard, that hidden story comes roaring to life through hands-on science, towering machinery, and 27 acres of Colorado history waiting to be explored.
Step Into Colorado’s Mining Past
Plunge your hands into cool water and swirl a gold pan, feeling for that telltale glint of treasure just like pioneers did over a century ago. Discover the surprising minerals hiding in your breakfast. Pull on a miner’s gear and imagine the grit and glow of 1890s family life. Outside, steel giants loom over the landscape—including a thundering ten-stamp ore mill that crushes rock before your eyes.
Follow the journey of ore from deep underground to the surface: the timber bracing dark tunnels, the crack of blasting powder, the scrape of shovels, and the rattle of carts hauling raw earth to the mill. Thousands of artifacts tell the story of an industry that shaped—and continues to shape—Colorado and the nation.
Hands-On Fun for the Whole Family
Daily tours (free with admission) guide you through exhibits built for curious hands of all ages. Little ones can dig into mining-themed crafts and activities during Family Exploration Days, where the museum transforms into a playground of discovery.
Events, Speakers, and Hidden Treasures
Throughout the year, the museum sparkles with special events—like the dazzling Gem and Mineral Show and the autumn Harvest Festival. Guest lecturers bring fresh perspectives on geology, history, and industry. And tucked away for serious researchers: a 5,000-volume library brimming with mining knowledge (by reservation only).

It's pretty cool to see actual working machinery. It's unusual to find them still operational and the people that know how the machines work are there giving the demonstrations. You can tell they really care about the preservation of mining history.

How long has the Western Museum of Mining & Industry been around?
The Museum of the West was incorporated in 1970 as a private non-profit with a mission to preserve and interpret the rich mining history of Colorado and the American West.
Do I need to call ahead for guided tours?
No need to call ahead of time! The museum has two guided tours every day; one at 10 a.m. and one at 1 p.m.
