Pikes Peak Cog Railway

The Pikes Peak Cog Railway offers one of the most incredible ways to view America’s Mountain. The new heated train cars have only improved the winter season, letting you ascend in comfort to catch an up-close glimpse of the beautiful scenic views. At the top, you’ll see for hundreds of miles, enjoy hot and fresh donuts made with a secret high-altitude recipe and pick up the obligatory fourteener t-shirt. The ride back down gives you more time to gawk at all of Colorado’s splendor, so be sure to snap all those photo ops you missed due to sheer awe.

Storm the Castle ... Politely

Winter is an exciting time of year to visit Miramont Castle because it is decked to the nines with Victorian Christmas decor. Every corner of the castle is adorned with festive flare — and there are a lot of corners! If you have the time and the appetite, you can book a high tea at the Queen’s Parlour Tearoom. The high tea is a filling four-course meal with tiny sandwiches, scones, fruits and a sweet suite of sweet treats.

Day 2

Naturally Indoors

What's more indoors than an underground cave?

Garden of the Gods Trading Post

Located on the Southwest edge of the world famous Garden of the Gods, the Trading Post has so many different facets, it literally has something for everyone in your group to enjoy.  You’ll find everything from coffee mugs and t-shirts, to handmade jewelry and locally made art — and a huge selection of it all. There’s also a ton of cool local history, and cafe and coffee shop complete with a beautiful patio to soak up some Colorado sunshine. This place is a local hidden gem with so much to offer!

Cave of the Winds Mountain Park

For indoor fun that’s still technically outdoors, take a tour of Cave of the Winds. Learn the history of this geologic marvel on a half-mile regular tour or the more adventurous lantern tour (limited days for lantern tours). When you’re done with caverns, you can take a breathtaking plunge into Williams Canyon on the Terror-Dactyl. You’ll fly at a whopping 100 miles per hour and the free fall will keep your heart pumping long after you’ve been hauled back to safety.

Day 3

The Wild West

Travel back in time to experience our wild history.

Wander Through History at the Ghost Town Museum

Explore the Colorado of yesterday at the Wild West Ghost Town Museum. The museum contains authentic, reconstructed buildings from actual ghost towns that are scattered throughout the state of Colorado. Kids and adults both love playing in the arcade and trying their hand at the  shooting gallery.  Be sure to check out the gift shop that sells old-fashioned candies and sarsaparilla so you can take a little reminder home with you.

Go Pro at the ProRodeo Hall of Fame

It probably wouldn’t be fair to call the horses or bulls of the rodeo “tame.” When it comes to the bulls, it might be better to refer to them as confined chaos. Many of the horses could even be classified as “cooperative.” The ProRodeo Hall of Fame celebrates these magnificent animals and their brave cowboy counterparts, exploring the history of the rodeo and the contributions of the American cowboy.

Ignite Your Inspiration at the Olympic & Paralympic Museum

The United States Olympic and Paralympic Museum is still fresh enough for us to refer to it as new. It’s also new in the sense that it leverages advanced interactive technology that allows you to get engaged with the museum every step of the way. On the weekends, you might even be lucky enough to meet an Olympian or two. We are next to one of the country’s three training centers!

To the Discovery Center ... And Beyond!

If you want some real winter fun that won’t leave you cold, pay a visit to an indoor attraction that is out of this world. The Space Foundation Discovery Center is a fun and fantastic place to burn off cabin fever while broadening your mind. Featuring interactive exhibits, space memorabilia, hands-on education, craft days and Science on a Sphere, the Discovery Center makes education fun. Stop in the gift shop on your way out and snag a package or two of astronaut ice cream. The next time the feeling of blizzard isolation sets in, you can all just pretend you’re on the space station.

Western Museum of Mining and Industry

Learn all about the mining industry in Colorado and the historic advances that have made it easier and safer for us to obtain the materials we need to power our technology. The museum has interactive exhibits and access to explore huge pieces of mining machinery on its grounds. If you have any rock collectors or anyone in the family who loves earth movers and equipment, you are going to make their day. Be sure to take a swirl at gold panning — it’s a fan favorite.

The Flying W Ranch Christmas Show

The Flying W Ranch offers winter celebrants a lovely way to celebrate the holidays in the winter. Their popular Christmas show, the Cowboy Christmas Jubilee, features live music from the world-famous Flying W Rangers, plus other entertainment and great food. The ranch is decorated for the holidays and their event space has heated floors to keep you warm as you sup on a traditional chuckwagon supper with dozens of your new best friends.
